Most people in the field of information technology know that the Information Technology Infrastructure Library® or ITIL® is a best practice framework that is meant to be adapted to the organization. It is not prescriptive. Within the framework, you will never find a list of steps that must be followed. The information provided is merely guidance that is based on best practices.
The key is to adapt the framework to your organization, implement the processes, and adopt the new processes and ITIL philosophies as a way of everyday life for the IT organization.
Many people will say that you do not “implement” ITIL processes. You should “adapt and adopt” them. Successful adoption actually requires all three steps -
1.) Adapt the framework and processes to your organization. Every organization is unique and every ITIL initiative is going to be customized.
2.) Implement the customized framework and processes. Focused effort is required to change existing processes, implement new processes, address organizational change, and measure progress.
3.) Adopt the new processes and philosophies as a way of doing business. Ensure that progress is sustained by anchoring the changes in the organization. Routinely reviewing and reacting to metrics, updating performance objectives, establishing governance, and updating policies are just a few examples of how to anchor ITIL related changes within the organization.
