I received an email today from a former member of my team. They expressed their appreciation for my providing them with candid feedback while we worked together. They indicated that it really helped them in their career.
The conversations they referred to were not easy. I had them anyway. It wasn't annual review time. It was a meeting that I scheduled as I wanted to provide some feedback.
I want to challenge you to have a candid conversation with your boss, peer, or employee. Rather than complaining about a situation or sending an email, schedule a time to actually sit down to talk through your concerns. Be accountable for changing the situation. While it may be difficult, it can be extremely rewarding.
Take the time to become comfortable with candid conversations. Approach them with heart and the best of intentions. You will be surprised at the positive difference you will make in the lives of others but also your own life.
Candid conversations are one small step in the culture change process.
