The BRM focuses on understanding the business partner’s goals and objectives. They work with the business to understand how information technology supports the required outcomes. A complex relationship exists between the BRM and the IT organization. This individual must be positioned to help IT manage both supply and demand for services. They focus on both business and IT strategy often playing a consulting role for both organizations helping to determine the appropriate sourcing mechanisms for new infrastructure and applications.
To be transformational, Business Relationship Managers view technology from the perspective of business value. While traditional IT operational metrics are important, a BRM must focus on how the technology supports the business process. Conversations with business partners revolve around business metrics and how technology can support process optimization.
As this role matures in the IT organization, the BRM discusses technology with the business in a language they can understand always equating technology to business outcomes and measures. Through this relationship and understanding, a true partnership with the business evolves.
